Project Location:
Arlington, Va.
Awards:
Winner of the 2013 DESIGNArlington: Excellence in New Construction, awarded to Moore Architects
Project Description:
The residence shown was build on the footprint of a single story rambler. The former home occupied the space of the basement of the new construction. Site work was required to help bring the mass of the residence back into scale with the surrounding neighborhood.
Besides the technical tasks of working out wall and step details, the planting plan required as part of LEED certification was one of the important parts of the project.
Working with plants over the past 20 years has given me a broad
knowledge base on which to draw in various situations. I enjoy the balancing act of selecting plants that will work together to simultaneously embrace civilization and wildness.
This site is now planted with a majority of native plants that support a wide variety of insect and bird species including honeybees, which the clients now keep in the backyard.
